<VV> Shift knob history

Does anyone know of the history of the white 4sp. shift knob in our
Corvairs. This past summer I had a gentleman who did not seem to believe
this was a Corvair/GM shift knob. He had it set in his mind that it was a
Hurst knob.

Is the white shift knob a GM creation that Hurst copied/used?
Did hurst originally make the white knob and GM used it for the Corvair?
