Yes, "opportunities" is the word I wanted ...
My advice is that, after a shop takes your car apart, and you don't elect to
have the work done, put the parts in a box and take it, and re-assemble it
yourself (sometimes this not possible, but don't let it go that far, if
that's the case).
Don't give them the "opportunity" to sabotage your car, intentionally or
inadvertently - they are just not as concerned about your car if they didn't
get the job, I figure.
Maybe just paranoid, but ...

Hi Chaz.
I believe the "recalls" are viewed as "opportunities" by
shops...
Well a couple of months ago I brought my '01 Tahoe in for a recall after
Chevrolet sent me an orange post card telling me to do so. I called the
800 number on the opti-orange warning card and told them I already took
care of the front ABS sensors and I'm SURE they're fine. I was told
that unless I was a "Certified Technician" that Chebby was on the hook
legally, so I agreed. The nice lady was nice enough to transfer me
directly to the closest Chevrolet dealer and I reluctantly made an
appointment.
Sooo, I explained to the service rep that it would be just fine
if they just inspected my work but don't do anything, just make sure I
don't get any more cards in the mail. Then I get the "call". "Your
truck has very marginal brakes". "We recommend you get all four rotors,
new emergency brake pads, and new front calipers. "Your tie rod ends are
shot as well". "They must be replaced immediately!"
Well I had the tie rods on my workbench at home as I just had it
inspected and the tech who conducted the inspection told me that there
was some play but not enough to reject. The brakes? The truck has 33K
miles on it and has been in a garage ever since I bought it new. They
have at LEAST another 10 thousand miles left! I said "no", I want my
truck.
I drive home and experience a pronounced wobble in my steering
wheel about a mile away from the dealer. They took off my rotors and
must have hurriedly put them back on, expecting me to say "yes" to the
work.
Cause? A flake of rust from the caliper wedged itself between he hub
and rotor.
JED

Apparently "recalls" are yet another way to get cars into dealerships,
ostensibly to do something "for free," but it's another opportunity to
sell
you something else that you MUST buy to qualify for the recall ! Just a
sales gimmick ?
