I remember this from my old VW days... I think pre-67... another "fix" was  
to shut it off in gear or let out on the clutch if so equipped. I had a 61  
Beetle that was bone stock, and it would run on like that from time to time due  
to the fuel not shutting off... and the first VW I had, a '68 autostick, had 
the  fuel shut off solenoid on the carb, that would shut off the fuel on the 
old  Solex, to keep it from running on... but I had to replace the engine so I 
stuck  in a spare 66 1300 that I had (after changing over the oil pump and 
several  other items particular to the autostick) and it would run on... I found 
that  pumping the fuel would have the same result as stopping in gear... just 
one of  those endearing qualities those little critters had...
