Expect to see more of this as time passes. With modern molding
techniques, aluminum can be made into very complicated shapes with
precision, which eliminates a lot of machining and waste, and what
machining that is necessary is easier than cutting on iron. It also
allows for a more compact result, which is getting to be pretty
important anymore when you look under the hoods of todays cars
crammed with everything you could imagine.
Then there's weight... ;)
Take note that a lot of all this reflects back to Corvair days, where
such was exploited for making 'Vair engines.
