Good advice from Bob Helt, Chuck Sadek and David Brown and others.
Bob's Suggestion:
Pull the valve covers and observe the valve action while rotating the
crank.
This I'll do next
Chuck's Suggestion:
...take the top cover off and look for clearance between rod bolts an
case studs.
Check the interference between the flywheel and the bellhousing bolts-
washers
aren't used on bottom ones where they might interfere.
This I'll do after Bob's suggestion
David Brown's Suggestion:
...turn the engine upside down & shake???
...a 2" bolt came tumbling out from where the crank shaft lives.
This is my favorite! And while I'll do the others suggetions I'm
betting a bolt or
screw have found it's way into the case or into a cylinder chamber.
