The exact same thing happened to me. The engine had an unknown history
& came with a bunch of parts. I had it sold to an airplane guy, who had
planned on rebuilding it, but he wanted to see it turn over. It would
go about 3/4 around & "CLUNK" & stop. Same thing back the other way.
Took the heads off- no problem seen. The top cover & oil pan were
already off. Nothing obvious seen, but the problem persisted. While we
rotated & turned the engine upside down, etc., a 2" bolt came tumbling
out from where the crank shaft lives. I guess someone had dropped it
down the oil spout at one time. I have been especially careful since
then whenever I have the oil cap off. So......, maybe turn the engine
upside down & shake???

Subject: <VV> '65 Corvair question.

I've got a motor that I'm tuning up before we put it in my son's car.
I changed the car from an auto to a manual.
I replaced front and rear main seals and new distributor internals and
spark plugs. I replaced the bell housing and oil filter housing gaskets.
While trying to get the distributor set correctly I was turning the
crankshaft by it's center bolt. Just before TDC the crank stops turning.
I tried turning it the other direction but when it gets almost to the
same place it locks again.

Before I pull the heads off and commit to all that stuff, does anyone
have any idea what I might be able to eliminate first.

I'm now fairly certain that I was seriously ripped off on this engine.
The guy I purchased it from said that it was running. I'm finding all
kinds of stuff that makes me doubt it. I'm not even going to admit how
much I paid for this motor. It was the only (supposedly) complete 110
motor that I found that someone wanted to sell me.
