it is possible to make the powerglide 140 conversion or any std shift engine 
a little better with powerglide by playing with the distributor advance ( or 
maybe putting correct distributor in?).  also go richer with carb jets. i have 
done this several times over the years. the worst performer was in a 
rampy...but thats going to really improve soon.( i hope) lol. 
 i found that powerglide engines going to standard worked great though.
i like the powerglide much better for overall travel or caravaning  , 
specialy in hilly country.
