I originally posted offline, but I'll add my opinion here... simply due to the environment and the function, most welders will fail at some point. The difference 
between the cheap offbrand units and the more expesnive name brand units is the availability of parts and service.

I picked up a well-used name brand unit for under $200, It's still set up just for flux core (which will likely meet my needs anyway) BUT is also readily 
upgradable (with readily available bits) to gas shielded welding. 

If I were buying this for a specific job, I could turn around and sell it after the job for the same I paid for it. If I decide to sell it 5 years from now, I'll bet it's still 
worth the same (or possibly more).

If you're going to buy a welder, this is not the time or place to scimp on the name brand. IMO.

Now I just need to learn how to use this thing....
