If it was me I would do exactly as you suggest -- use R12 until you 
cannot (and I suspect you will be able to use R12 forever).  I have a 
1980 Toyota that has been recharged once around 1998, so the next 
recharge hopefully won't be for a decade.  If the system is good and 
you don't lose any, the difference in cost matters little.  And you 
won't have the cost of swapping it out.  And it will cool better.
