Many years ago we the occasional electrical type problem with our Corvair.  More than once I couldn't figure out the problem and thought it might be the coil.  IT WAS NEVER THE COIL!  It was the battery once and something else another time.  It's impossible for me to change the coil on anything now.

Bob,  Bill touches on something that could possibly be your problem.  Got a 
known good coil around to try?
