Hi Cecil,
You CAN mark the side adjusters and count the number of turns and remove, re-O-ring and replace. Some cautions however, to reach inside the passenger side and make sure the pinion or ring has not shifted down, otherwise you will try to rotate the adjuster inward and it will bind up and strip the thin threads on the replaced side cover. I can personally assure you of this. You might even get by jacking up one side and working on that one and then the other side without draining the diff. Have a large drip pan under there just in case once you start pulling the side cover off. Alternatively, you could just drain or suction out a pint or so and that should work.
You might get by making a removingadjusting tool, but make sure it is strong enough at maybe 1/4 inch thick or so. I am sure a jig saw and a drill and file and you could make one of these for yourself economically, if you work for about $0.25 cents/hour. LOL. Actually, the purchased tools from Underground or elsewhere are worth it. Richard Finch's book gives plans for a DIY side adjuster. I suspect they are not too rusted to each other. Remember to remove the adjusting locking tab, naturally.
