Folks, keep in mind that often GM serviced many different parts used on the
assembly line with just one service part so the P&A only tells you what was
used in service and then only as of the date of the manual which may be
years later.. Similarly, the Service Manual was put together in the
earliest production so misses slipstreamed changes.
You really need all four: Assembly manual, Parts book, Service Manual, and
all TSBs/campaign notices/recall notices to have a good idea. Add to this
component differences are often noted in the component manufacturer's books
and not any Chevrolet book (the complete Delco Remy listings often show
one part number for "First Production" and a second part number for "Second
Production").
BTW there also were often different elements (particularly brightwork,
stripes, and insignia) used between assembly plants. Is it possible that
one plant used silver grills and another used body color ones or that the
change occured during a model run ?
Sounds like this level of detail is just starting for Corvairs, other
makes/models have been doing it for years.
