Think the fact that engines need six speed transmissions says a lot. At a
time when VVT engines should be increasing torque bands, the six speeds say
we are not. Sounds like they are having to use three planetary sets to get
that many or are we now using conventional gearsets ? Really have not kept
up with anything after the "E" transmissions came out.
My 3800 cars are at least a decade old and I really wonder why they have so
many gears (4T60 has lockup on 3rd and 4th.
Wife's new Scion has four + lockup and seems plenty for a 1.5 liter from
town through excess Interstate speeds. Do think the Monza's automatic could
use an overdrive/lockup but six ?
Besides I thought we would have CVTs by now (think GM is selling to China).
