a ticking lifter sounds like my wifes heart valve when she over does it...(st 
jude mechanical valve).  i could not resist that one.
i would say that most lifters that are noisey after setting will calm down 
with a can of trans fluid (type a!) or rislone added to the oil then driven 
carefully a ways . this has been know to work very well for many years on all 
kinds of hydraulic lifter engines.
i have also seen first hand ,very sludgey engines saved/revived just by 
changing the oil very frequently and subbing a quart of  type a fluid for a quart 
of oil.corvairs included.
