I have repaired two broken manifold studs on our daily drivers by welding a
stainless steel bolt into the remaining slot where the original stud was
threaded in. In both cases I needed to clean up the area with a grinder to
get the bolt to fit snugly and to clean off corrosion for a good weld. I
used nickel-based welding electrode specific for repairs to cast iron, but
I suppose brazing would work fine. It is good practice to clamp or wire
the bolt securely in place and thoroughly heat the end of the manifold
before welding it. I pulled the lower shroud in each case and attached the
welder's ground clamp farther up out of harms way.
Apply anti-seize compound to the bolt (now a stud) and secure the exhaust
with a pair of brass nuts (jammed together).
