using 2 lug nuts as spacers may let the starter jump enough to damage the 
ring gear. i did this for many years way back and had problems at times until i 
finally got to make a real spacer. i made mine from a junk broken case. i 
suggest more support than the 2 nuts somehow, even if it is  hardwood or something. 
the sound of a starter grinding the ring gear on the bench is not a pleasant 
one and very loud.. even with my bad memory it stands out..  regards, tim
