You can set the front toe in the guy's driveway, well enough to drive home
anyway.
Preparation: Jack up the front end of the car then:
1) Get some wide masking tape and wrap it around the outside of the tire,
near the center of the tread.
2) Spin the tire and touch the tape with a very steadily held felt-tip pen
to create a straight line on the masking tape all around the tire.
2.1) Repeat for the other front tire
3) Set the car on the ground and roll it a foot forward.
4) As close as you can, measure the distance between the lines on each front
tire at the front (9 o'clock) and rear (3 o'clock) positions. Be sure that
the tape measure is horizontal and not sagging.
5) Adjust the front tie rod ends evenly so that the rear-of-tire measurement
is about 1/8" larger than the front-of-tire measurement.
6) Roll the car forward a foot and recheck
That's it. I have done this for years in preparation for the alignment
shop. It's pretty accurate. For extra credit, learn how to center the steering
wheel too!
