In my experience, the OEM gauges are not very accurate car-to-car, but do serve as a good indication if something has changed on _your_ car. Like you,
I rarely hit 300...and only 350-375 or so when towing (and you can smell the engine)! Even when I threw a belt, the gauge never went above 400 though
I'm pretty sure the engine was hotter than that.
I'm certain either my gauge reads low or a lot of others read hot.
Evidence for the latter...in my track car at VIR (remember how hot that day was?) I had a balancer coming apart...and threw the belt three times before we
figured it out. One of the last times, the smoke was rolling off the engine...just about as hot as I've ever seen a Corvair engine... and yet the Autometer
gauge was saying about 425. None of us believed this, so Rob Fike came over with his handheld.... 425 was accurate.
