His Valiant must have been in a poor state of tune. Mine would do 95mph
easy. On a good day if I pressed it hard enough it could manage 100 mph
even. That's asking a lot from a relatively heavy little car with 101 bhp
from 170 ci.
My '60 4-door would top out at ~85 mph or thereabouts, mainly because it
had some stiff gearing in back, starts in on floating valves at anything
much over 80 while buzzing its brains out. Lots of miles on that
engine... soft springs etc.
Still haven't repaired the engine... although I've almost finished the
building where the engine sill go back together. The roof (shingles)
went on it over the weekend, next comes paint (or siding depending on what
sort of deal I can get for siding) and hanging the front door and then the
bench, shelves, lights, moving my tools and other such junk in etc. I'll
finally have a place to work on engines... seeing as how my basement is
filled with vehicles and parts etc leaving no room to do anything. I'll
sure as Hell be glad when the building is finished and I can actually get
started on some of these car projects again.
Next weekend, NC Fall show... buy some more parts, give Bill Loftin 5
bucks for postage for sending me the Porsche to Vair transaxle yoke
adaptors, and of course I'll be bothering Hank as usual for any deals he
may have on those Ultra spare parts.
Hell, by the time I get back from Raleigh, I might have the building up and
running and I might be able to get back to work on Vairs again... :)
...although now there's issues afoot about putting up a car port, to cover
4 cars. The more the merrier.
