The special tool is nothing more than a piece of flat iron, say 1/4" thick
with 4 small holes to bolt to the Ubolt holes on the flange and a large hole
in the middle for the bolt to push on the end of the axle. Tack weld a nut
behind the big hole.
Your method will also work, but I've found it easier with somebody big
holding the axle flange and someone else using a length of pipe to reach in
against the shoulder of the yoke and whack it with a sledge hammer. One or
two hits opposed to 40 or 50.
The puller is easier probably, considering the consequences of a missed hit.
