You are correct ... unless your pan comes already damaged -- say 
over-torqued and bent (not flat) edges ... I assume from an idiot the 
remove all the bolts except one side while it had fluid in it, forcing it 
to bend.  Getting it flat and removing the dimples is more difficult that 
it sounds given that the metal was old and stressed.  I did stop 95% of my 
leaks doing as you suggest ... but I wanted 100%.  A good stock pan should 
seal fine, a good aluminum pan seals very easily and will be much easier to 
install and remove in the future and has the added benefit of cooling 
better.  It just costs money, but given that I was going to have to buy a 
pan anyway, the differential was not huge.
