<VV> Split Heat Pumps

I live in Central Florida, and probably 95% of all HVAC systems installed down
this way are split heat pump systems. They work great down here, but I can't
imagine any practicality in using one up north. All of these units use
auxiliary heat strips (electric coil heat) that furnishes heat when the
temperatures drop down around freezing, and the pump itself can no longer pull
heat from the outside. How many KVA strips one uses depends on how much heat
one would need in very cold weather. Of course you then basically have a very
large electric heater which is not at all frugal to use for heat. Actually
some of the cut rate systems use strips only (instead of a heat pump) and in
our area isn't totally impractical, but still expensive to use when the
weather gets down below freezing. (which isn't very often, but does happen),
