Andy,

Correct, but with the cover off, those items should be obvious.  Hey, I hope
for his sake that it is not a valve seat.  I only came up with that
diagnosis as a result of his description of the circumstances surrounding
the occurrence of the miss.  That is what caused me to say valve seat.
