Dave,

Lets go over your list and I'll give you my opinion.

1. Oil leak at the oil pan. If you have the steel pan it will leak no matter
what you do as the warp with the high heat that these engines run at.
Changing to an aluminum pan will solve that problem. If the pan is aluminum then a
gasket will take care of it.

2. Low fuel mileage There are a lot of reasons for this, choke not working,
dirty carb, high float, timing, vacuum leak, dirty air filter, valve
adjustment, etc..

3. Knocking. If this is engine ping (which I suspect) this must be
addressed as it can lead to engine damage. Heat is the main reason for ping, hot
spots in the cylinder ignites the fuel prematurely and causes the noise. There
are many things that can cause this, fuel (use only premium fuel) timing,
thermostats, plugged oil cooler, vacuum advance, distributor.

4. Turbo. The turbo on these engines work at about 2500 to 3000 RPM and are
difilcut to notice especialy with all of the other problems that you say you
are having.

5. Shifting. One of the first thing that I would check is the oil level in
the transmission, if it is low it will cause the syncrow to stick and make it
hard to shift. Also check the differencial.

6. Brakes pulling. If there are no leaks at the brakes, the fluid level is
ok then it can be adjustment, frozen wheel cylender or rusted brake drums.

7. I do not do body work.

What I would suggest is a major tune up with a carburator overhaul, replace
oil pan or gasket, pull all wheels and inspect the brakes, make sure that the
thermosthat's are working properly, fill the transmission and differencial. I
can have someone look at the body rust.

I just had a cataract removed and am recovering witch will take at least two
more weeks and then I am in the middle of an engine replacement right now
that will take another week to finish.

I can pick your car up with my car trailer. I am retired and work 2 to 5
hours a day which can run a few weeks to get things done.

Let me know,

Lionel
