I had a 56 Century with the switch-pitch. Not real sprightly off the 
line, even in manual low.
But 35-55 it stayed with a 327 impala, that was surprise to the Impala 
owner.
Never did any testing in reverse, I can't really imagine what you were 
doing to discover that.
(Dynaflow was 2 speed like Powerglide, but they had the 5-element 
converter with switchable vanes, so the trans stayed in direct unless 
you manually selected low.
