Technically speaking, it’s sudden acceleration that kills (acceleration defined as change in velocity) - sudden stopping being really just sudden acceleration in the opposite direction of travel.

My rules for driving:  Space!  Visibility!  And assume everybody else is out

The 1st two are from a Car&Driver article from back in the '60's about "The
World's Best Driver."  Some old guy who had driven more than a million
miles.
