Since mid 70's - shell 10W30 with a quart of STP  (different Hp heads on each side - 110 / 140 blocked) - knock on wood - never an engine problem in a Corvair. (14 hr round trips from Camp lejune to the Foothills of SC at least every other weekend) - Only on the side of the road to help water pumpers or replace an occasional fanbelt in the dark of night - once a wheel bearing.  Maintain it and drive it like you own it - You should be good.
