 Thanks for your responses.  I'm going to replace everything inside the bell
housing.  The car has over 100,000 miles on it so I guess I got my money's
worth!

Broken starter noses are almost ALWAYS caused by broken starter ring on the
clutch plate.
Remove the clutch pressure plate and re-weld the starter welds.

Is there anything else that can break a starter nose other than a loose
flywheel?  My Spyder wouldn't crank more than "Rrr-Rrr"  when I took it out
of winter storage.  I pulled the started, and the part of the nose had
broken off.  See photos.  It had no signs like rattling or vibration when I
put it away last fall.
