I suppose they were riveted just because that’s the way they used to do things but nothing bad will happen if you remove the rivets . The wheel lug nuts will hold the drum on securely.

Does anyone know why the front brake drums on early model cars are riveted to the hub?  What would happen if you drilled out the rivets so the drums were demountable like on the late models?  I’ve always wondered about this whenever I do work or check the brakes on my early models.
