Even with the step completely removed the push rod tubes won't be an issue. You'd have to remove so much that your compression would be so high you could only use race gas.Paul Fox

Few heads are still that!  Head I just replaced was 0.610”  and the xxx759 I installed
  [ ’67 ]  is 0.560”
