Two more examples:
Our '65 Greenbrier now has 25K miles on the rebuilt modified 110 engine
by Ken Hand. I have used Amsoil 10W-30 since the rebuild. There are NO
oil leaks whatsoever. Oil consumption is about 1 qt/3500 mi; very good
for 1960's engine technology.
My wife's '65 Monza was purchased in 1999 with a recently rebuilt +0.060
110. We have put 40k+ miles on that car. At the first oil change in
1999 I put in Mobil 1 and the rear main seal promptly started leaking. I
switched to Valvoline High Mileage and it quit. I then put in a new rear
main seal and went back to Mobil 1, then Mobil 1 High Mileage. There
are no leaks whatsoever on this engine either. Oil consumption is about
1 qt/2500 miles.
I suspect that the observed oil consumption on well running "tight"
Corvair engines is not so much through the rings, but as loss by
mist/vapor that gets by the primitive PVC system.
