<VV> Speakers for LM

I did this several years ago. I took two 4X6 in. , 4 ohm speakers, wired in
series. I used good quality high efficiency car speakers and mounted them
on a piece of fiber board that is the same size as the original 6X9
speaker. Then I glued a block of wood to the assembly to act as the magnet
structure for the bracket that holds the speaker up to the dash. I did the same
thing for the original rear speaker. It sounds the same as the original
speakers, No better or worse with my stock AM/FM radio. With the rear speaker,
you need to find speakers that are not too deep, or you will have problems
with the grille and the package depth.
Or, if you have the original speakers, they can be re-coned.

A long time ago I thought about mounting two small 4 ohm speakers, wired
in series in the stock location. I never did it but it would present
roughly 8 ohm impedance to the radio and depending on the speaker
selection, could sound pretty good. One challenge would be finding high
efficiency 4 ohm drivers, that won't break the bank. You could also use
an impedance matching transformer. I think Hammond makes some that
would work great and are fairly inexpensive.
