<VV> Question about '63-'64 rear brake drums

First and foremost, the acceptable limit of drums is .060", so only one
of yours needs replacing.

Only have a drum turned if there is excessive grooving or warping. There
are no new replacements of these drums at the moment. Clark's lists 63
rear aftermarket drums, but they are out of stock now. They have not
listed 64 rear drums in YEARS!

There is a backing plate change, so 64 drums may not fit your 63 backing
plates. Same for front drums. Slip one on and try it. The larger OD of
the 64 is because there is a extra lip on the drum, not because there is
more meat on it. This lip must clear the backing plate.

The backing plate also changes 62 to 63, because the axle bearing
changes from sheet metal housing to cast housing.

All the other brake parts are the same 63 to 64.

I can tell you a friend had a .090" oversize drum on his 63 and the
shoes fit fine, stopped fine when he first bought it. Who knows how many
miles it took to wear the shoes to the large drum . But, Maryland state
inspection measured it (they are through on initial buying inspection)
and flunked it.

.050" oversize should last you a long time.

I do not consider changing the front drums to 64 style to be any
upgrade. Same shoe square inches, same non finned surface, same wheel
bearings, just an extra lip.
