<VV> pinging

Has anyone tried trimming the side electrode to help control pinging?  I've done it with some success on air cooled motorcycles.  I cut it down and bent it so that it pointed at the center electrode from the side.  Since the center electrode is what has to stay hot enough to keep from fouling, making the heat path on the side electrode shorter seemed to be a good idea since it is hanging out so far from everything else.

It would be nice to be able to run cheap gas in my 84hp like I can in 95hp engines.
