The only 3-speed manual trans vehicle I have had is my 58 Chevy
Suburban--2bbl 283, column shift. I found it quite enjoyable to drive,
but it certainly doesn't do "spirited driving". The shifter throws
are...long...they feel like about a foot.
I don't drive Corvairs (66 w/4-speed) or Lotus (73 twin cam w/5-speed)
like an old Suburban, so I'd rather have the 4 gears or more. I don't
mind the shifting--it's instinctive and enjoyable. The Lakewood came
with a 80hp 3-speed; the first thing we did was to swap in a 102hp and
4-speed...for the "spirited driving" factor.

Certainly the 4-speed is better for more spirited driving with its better ratios. Does anyone have a convertible with a 3-speed? It seems that everyone replaces a 3-speed as soon as they can. I'm just wondering how many cars still have their 3-speeds.
