Well, every short shaft early steering box I have is aluminum case. I
didn't look at the 64s, 5s or 6s.
The short shaft lates (the splines are different, but you can modify an
early to fit a late) are cast iron.
Maybe it is different suppliers (OK, different Saginaw plants?). Or
somebody put low milage late short shaft boxes into some earlies that
Smitty has.
More data needed for statistical analysis.
