What is there to see? Exhaust is clear and a slight leak wouldn't be
visible and if there is one, you can smell and hear it so what's the plastic
for?

Smitty Says; Acrylic “plexiglass” becomes pliable at 240 degrees. Heat
under those side seals must get close to half again that after the engine is
shut off. Hot oil ,grease and gasoline would quickly brown the plastic. On
top of that you really couldn’t see anything of value through the plastic
even if it stayed transparent.
