Quick question:  While ascending those steep Rockie hills, did you by chance, use the "drop 'er down into the next lower gear and go slowly, about 35/40 mph over the hill " tip?   It greatly increases the air flow over the engine.  I learned that tip a long time ago and since I live in the mountains of south central Pennsylvania, have put it into use many times with super results.  If not, try it - you'll like it.
