Sounds like symptoms of a leaky modulator. Check for ATF in the modulator
nipple and hose.

My 65 monza sat for a while. Rebuilt the carbs but still has slow
acceleration. Dropped the powerglide pan, cleaned the filter and replaced
the fliud. Ran like a bat out of hell but a to n of white smoke. Modulator?
Before I take it out, what should I look for? I heard they cant be cleaned,
but a bad one ALWAYS needs replacement.
