I ran for the board once. Bill Hubbell beat me out. Biggest favor he's ever
done for me in the 18 years I've known him.
I had back-channel access to the goings on of the BoD over a period of about
8 years since the turn of the century. And since I jointed I've seen at
least 5 Directors who didn't finish their terms, or quit the club after they
did.
Some previous BoD members who ran for multiple terms then stepped down
recycled themselves a few years back, and they got disgusted too.
I never threatened not to re-up my membership. Don’t remember if it was
2010 or 2011 I said if they raise the dues again and every chapter isn't
100% CORSA, I'm all done. It wasn't a threat. It was a matter of principle.
They raised the dues again, and I've not been a member since.
One of the directors sent me a private e-mail saying "F**K OFF HANK!" That
director also left the club when his term was over, and has not rejoined.
That kind of message from a leader of the club didn't give me any kind of
"Warm Fuzzy".
So when I saw that there were empty seats on the Board, I sure wasn't
surprised. Not even a little. And since I was a member since 88 I know
just about everyone I feel like I need to know, I'm getting ready to
jettison my Communique's because I've realized that I never look into them
at all, and I haven't missed the club all that much. My Corvair friends who
are CORSA members are still my friends.
I WAS pleased to see Ken Hand finally get on the Board, and as President I
think the Club has a chance. With Harry and Mike hanging up the spurs,
there's some heavy waves ahead, and its going to take some dedicated folks
to make it work.
A suggestion to the Directors---I was on the committee that planned my HS
classes 40 year reunion which was held earlier this month. There were 9 of
us involved in the planning---a group almost as large as the BoD---a year
out from the Event---we scheduled a weekly Monday evening Conference call,
where we worked on details, passed reports back and forth, and conducted
the whole thing over the phone---even though I was one of only 2 of the nine
that didn't live in Buffalo, even THEY couldn't get together at a central
location as often as would be needed to meet. We planned a Golf
Tournament, Stag night, Holy Mass and a reception/Banquet. Classmates
came from as far away as Sweden to be involved, everything ran great, we've
yet to hear ONE negative comment. Dedication, planning, and conducting
regular meetings without traveling from all over and the money it costs were
key factors.
If CORSA is going to survive---and attract members who have left for
whatever reason, a very dedicated group doesn't have to spend a lot of money
and give up their vacation to hold a seat on the BoD. Trying to address
all of the problems of the club at one, or just a couple of meetings over a
year? It might be "The way it's always been done"---but look at the
results.
I wish the club good luck in getting new management/publishing personnel,
finding someone who's as good at negotiating contracts as Harry, and
finding people who want to bust their hump to improve the club to fill the
empty seats.
Best Regards
HANK
There are empty seats on the CORSA's BoD. Fill them. Stop you crapping,
put your nose down and get to work like Allen (at least two of them), Herb,
Fred, Clay, Bob (at least two of them also!), Pete, Ken, Tony, Larry, Seth
and many others did so many years ago. They poured their hearts and souls
into CORSA.
But understand, in joining the BoD, you should plan on committing you bank
book, credit card(s) and vacation time to the effort.
So folks, do you want to go back to the loosely organized car club run by
volunteers? Keep it up.
Historically Yours,
James Rice
