 I've also had this trouble due to a crack in the tach's PC board. Soldering across the crack fixed it.

If the tach jumps and then comes back, it is losing its signal or the
ground is
poor. If you also notice a loss of power or a miss, I would
suspect a ground
issue in the distributor, or from the distributor to
the engne block.
