So, to set the timing, advance the timing until it pings, then back it off  
until it stops!

Just bought a rampside that had pushrod seals leaking, a  friend and I put 
the seals in and was going to put the engine on #1 to  adjust 6 of the 
valves, there is no marking on the crankshaft pully.   Looked, felt, and 
scraped paint there was  nothing.

Smitty  Says;  Ran into one just a few days ago.  Did a very thorough job 
of  
scraping, brushing, and wiping.  I guarantee no marks were  there.  Looked 
very much like a GM  original.
