Thanks again for the replies. I found the numbers and fortunately the area was pretty clean and the numbers visible even with the limited access.  The last 4 (all I can see crawling under the car) match the VIN of the car which should be enough evidence that it is legitimate, they were looking for 3. It is impressive that the information the inspector had was correct even though he didn't know how the spell Corvair.
