The torque wrenches that we use in the commercial field "break" in the middle when they achieve the set torque.There are also other systems that are used,but it's funny that they all are tested by comparing to a calibrated torque wrench.Lubrication ,or lack of would depend greatly, but I seem to recall that a lightly oiled surface is the best.

I have used a touch up paint marker, and even a sharpie to touch up small nuts and bolt heads.
