Sounds like a bad trans mount, I haven't changed them in the car but there are plenty of folks who have.  One use for the 1/2" 90 degree bent end of the fan belt wrench many of us have is to hold the bolts that attach the mounts to the cross member.  Just be sure that both the car and the transmission are well supported.
