Timothy,
The selenium rectifier is an early version of the commonly used now DIODE.  
the rectifier allows current to flow in just one direction. thus it allows 
the  headlights to cut the A/C fan to medium when on but doesn't allow the 
A/C fan to  turn on the headlights.
