If either of those are true, I believe you should see the indicator lights
with the pigtail to "BAT" still disconnected after all other connections are
reestablished. Another long shot is that your ignition switch has failed,
coincidentally at the same time you were doing the other work.

Roger - The only thing I can think of would be the connection at the
starter. Perhaps you have rotated the main battery cable connector around
enough
that it is touching the output lead to the coil? That hot lead from the
battery to the starter always has 12 volts to it, (until you disconnected
the
battery end!) somehow jumping it to the coil feed would power up the coil,
keeping the engine running, and feed 12 volts up to the dash for your
engine lights to illuminate. The engine lights went off when the
generator/alternator started supplying 12 volts to the other side. Check
your connections
at the starter. It is also possible for the starter solenoid to have the
same effect, if it has an internal problem, but it is rare. It is the next
place to look though!

I replaced the battery cables on my rampside today, I bolted the ground to
the engine, and the positive to the strarter and the pigtail from the
positive cable to the battery terminal on the voltage regulator. Went up
to
start the motor and noticed the engine lights were on, I turned the key to
start the engine and it started right up the lights went off. let it run
for
a bit and turned the key to the off position and the motor kept running.
I had to disconnect the cables for the motor to stop. I bolted everything
up just like I took the old ones off. Whats wrong. Thanks Roger
