I heartily agree. Pulling the tank is the only way to go. It looks like all the suggestions so far are almost as much work as if you went ahead and pulled it anyway.
If you do pull it, you can also inspect and replace, if necessary, the filler tube rubber piece and the vent rubber piece. PLUS as an added bonus, you can also check the brake line that runs behind the tank and the sway bar rubber bushings, too.
