Actually, the 'cup' you're soldering to has about the same CTE as the glass. This is on purpose, so the glass to metal seal can be made without trapping stresses. So, soldering should be very straightforward!

So, as I read automotive history, Arrol-Johnston, Argyll and Albion were all
19th century cars, then the Hillman Imp came along and finally the Corvair was
the last of the real Scottish cars? (Okay, the Imp was built starting in '63,
but for the purposes of this note, let's just suspend reality for a moment - it
shouldn't be too difficult)
I must say that the concept of re-soldering a
headlamp bulb had never crossed my mind, but perhaps only because they were
readily available for only a few dollars to replace. I commend your penny
pinching efforts! You are being very environmentally friendly too, refusing to
allow a manufactured item to the trash before it is completely worn out. In the
few years that I have been interested in Corvairs, I have learned many lessons
in frugality that I am certain would not have been learned with any other group.
>From the specific point of can it be done, it seems critical to be very
specific with the soldering iron so as not to overheat and possibly crack the
glass due to the different heat expansion rates of the metal tab and the glass
surrounding it. But otherwise a straight-forward operation if that is all that
is wrong with the bulb.

terminal back onto a headlight bulb? Yes it was a good bulb. It came off as I
tried to unpluge it.
