My point exactly, since my friend was nice enough to spring for the GL-5,
I'd hate to through away his nice gesture, but don't want to ruin my
transaxle being nice about it.
So, I want to know fer shizzle ...
Thanks to all on VV for a gazillion caveats and teachable moments!

Charlie,
On a 4spd (which shares the gear oil between tranny and diff), essentially
you want GL-4 in both. Reason - protection for the sychronizers in the
tranny AND the hypoid gear set in the diff. BUT... GL-4 is not on the
shelf at the FLAPS, so you have to search for where to order.
When trying to order, you are presented with a myriad of products. The
discussion has been (to my way of thinking) primarily about what is the BEST
product to order for manual trans Corvairs. I'm not sure that there is
agreement on that particular question. There probably isn't.
Oils have changed since our cars were built. There are several designations
which did not exist in 1959. So, it becomes a matter of figuring out what
to (and not to) use based on today's labeling.
GL-5 is most likely wrong unless the labeling tells you specifically that it
is for use with both synchronized tranny AND hypoid gear set. Since most
cars today are automatics, it's difficult to find something appropriate for
our stick shift Corvairs.
I know that I did not address everyone's input in this summary, but I did my
best to capsulize this for you.
Later, JR
